About the author Axel Scheffler is an award-winning illustrator of some of the world’s best-loved children’s books. He’s most famous for his collaboration with Julia Donaldson, across books such as The Gruffalo’s Child, Room on the Broom, The Highway Rat and many other timeless classics. Many of them have been made into short films for TV, always retaining Scheffler’s signature style, and have been adapted into theatre and a wide range of other media. Scheffler was born in 1957 in Hamburg, Germany. He studied at the Bath Academy of Art and Cooper Union in New York, which cemented his desire to become an illustrator. He began as a freelance illustrator in 1986, when he lived in Stretham Hill, and published his first book in 1988.
